Things to Do

The Dhow Factory Experience: This is the heart of Sur. Visit the traditional shipyards where craftsmen still build massive wooden Dhows (traditional Arabian boats) by hand, often without a single blueprint. It is a living museum of a craft that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Turtle Watching at Ras Al Jinz: Just 40 minutes south of Sur is one of the world's most important nesting sites for Green Turtles. Taking a guided night or dawn tour to see these massive creatures nesting in the sand is a life-changing experience.

Corniche Walk at Sunset: The Sur Corniche is a 6-kilometer promenade that comes alive in the evening. It’s the best way to soak in the city’s vibe, watch the local football matches on the sand, and see the dhows anchored in the lagoon.

Explore the Al Ayjah District: Cross the suspension bridge to the older side of the city. Walking through the narrow alleys of Al Ayjah feels like stepping into a historical novel, with goats wandering past merchant houses and old forts.

Al Ayjah Lighthouse: Perched on the edge of the lagoon entrance, this three-story lighthouse offers the best views of Sur’s skyline and the sparkling Gulf of Oman.

Sunaysilah Fort: A 300-year-old fortress sitting on a hill overlooking the town. It’s beautifully restored and offers great perspectives of the inland city and the sea.

Sur Maritime Museum: Home to the famous Fatah Al Khair, a massive restored dhow that represents the pinnacle of Omani shipbuilding. The museum tells the story of the sailors who navigated from here to Zanzibar and beyond.

The Suspension Bridge (Khor Al Batah): The only bridge of its kind in Oman, it connects the main city to Al Ayjah and offers a perfect vantage point for photos of the lagoon.

Best Time to Visit

Season: October to April for the best weather.

Turtle Season: July to September is the peak nesting season, though turtles can be seen year-round. Note that summer in Sur is humid but slightly cooler than Muscat.

Pro Tips

Dhow Factory Access: The shipyard is a working site. You can usually enter for a small fee (around 1 OMR). It is generally open from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, but work may be quieter on Fridays.

Evening Karak: Sur is famous for its small tea shops along the main roads. Grab a "Karak" tea and find a spot near the Al Ayjah lighthouse for the best sunset view.

The Coastal Road: The drive from Muscat to Sur (Route 17) is one of the most scenic in the country. Plan for stops at the Bimmah Sinkhole and Wadi Shab on your way.
