The Blue Fjords of Muscat

Bandar Al Khairan is where the Hajar Mountains literally sink into the sea. This creates a landscape of calm, winding inlets (khors) that are protected from the open ocean waves. It’s a stark, beautiful contrast: rugged, dry peaks meeting vibrant turquoise water. It’s arguably the best spot in the capital region for anyone who wants to feel like they’ve escaped to a remote island.

Things to Do

  • Kayaking & Paddleboarding: Because the "fjords" keep the water calm, it’s the perfect place to rent a kayak and explore the hidden coves at your own pace.
  • Snorkeling with Turtles: The coral reefs here are some of the healthiest near Muscat. You’ll almost certainly see colorful parrotfish, and if you’re lucky, a hawksbill turtle or a rays gliding beneath you.
  • Boat Tours & Dolphin Watching: Many boat operators leave from the nearby Marina Bandar Al Rowdha or Sifah. A sunset cruise through these inlets is a top-tier Omani experience.
  • Hiking to "Secret Beach": There is a famous short trail (about 20 minutes) from the viewpoint parking lot that leads down to a secluded, sandy beach that is inaccessible by car.
  • Places to See

  • The Main Viewpoint: Even if you don't swim, the view from the cliff-top parking area is iconic. You can see the entire network of islands and inlets stretching out toward the horizon.
  • The Mangrove Inlets: Deep inside some of the "khors," you’ll find small clusters of mangroves which act as a nursery for local birdlife and fish.
  • Khor Al Khairan: The largest inlet, which is popular for yachts and local dhows to anchor for weekend "boat parties" and BBQ sessions.
  • Stargazing Spots: Because it’s tucked behind the mountains and away from the city lights of Qurum, it’s one of the closest places to Muscat to see a clear, starry sky.
  • Trip & Itinerary Advice

    Best Time to Visit

Season: October to April for the best weather. Time of Day: Sunrise is spectacular here. Alternatively, arrive by 3:00 PM to hike down to a beach, swim, and watch the sunset from the water.

    Pro Tips

Vehicle: A 4WD is not needed to reach the main viewpoint (the road is paved). However, if you want to drive all the way down to some of the lower beach levels, a 4x4 is necessary for the steep, rocky tracks. Facilities: There are no shops or toilets at Bandar Al Khairan. It is a wild spot. Bring all your water, snacks, and trash bags to take your waste back with you. Boat Access: If you don't want to hike, go to the nearby Yiti or Qantab village and ask a local fisherman to drop you at one of the Khairan beaches and pick you up later (usually costs around 10–15 OMR).

    Suggested Half-Day Itinerary

  • 2:30 PM: Leave Muscat and take the winding road through the mountains toward Yiti/Sifah.
  • 3:15 PM: Park at the Bandar Al Khairan Viewpoint. Take 10 minutes to soak in the panoramic view and snap photos.
  • 3:30 PM: Follow the trail down to the "Hidden Beach."
  • 4:00 PM: Snorkel along the rocky edges of the cove.
  • 5:30 PM: Hike back up to the viewpoint just in time to watch the sun sink behind the Hajar Mountains.
  • 6:30 PM: Drive back toward Muscat, perhaps stopping for a coffee in the Sifah Marina area.
