Ancient aflaj system: Over 190 irrigation channels throughout the region, with notable examples still functioning today.

Travel & Safety Tips
Vehicle requirements: Most areas are accessible by standard 2WD vehicles, though a 4WD is recommended for accessing deeper parts of the wadi or remote trails.
Best time to visit: Between October and April for cooler temperatures and clearer skies.
What to bring: Carry water, sunscreen, snacks, and comfortable walking shoes. There are limited shops and facilities in remote areas.
Heritage etiquette: Respect local customs, avoid touching ancient structures, and do not pick fruit or disturb water channels.
Weather caution: Avoid visiting wadis during heavy rain or when thunderstorms are forecast due to flash flood risk.
Getting There
By car: About 1 to 1.5 hours from Muscat, easily accessible via the Samail Gap highway.
Public transport: Buses and shared taxis reach Samail town, but you’ll need private transport to access outlying villages and attractions.
Suggested combinations: Samail is well-positioned for day trips that also include Nakhal Fort, Al Thowarah Hot Spring, or Al Hoota Cave.
Best Times to Visit
Cool season (October to April): Ideal for outdoor exploration, hikes, and cave visits.
Early mornings or late afternoons: Recommended for comfortable weather, fewer crowds, and the best lighting for photography.
