Jabal Akhdar, often referred to as the "Green Mountain," is a stunning mountain range in Oman’s Al Hajar Mountains. Located about 150 kilometers from the capital, Muscat, it is renowned for its lush greenery, terraced farms, and cool climate, which contrasts sharply with the surrounding arid desert landscapes. The region is celebrated for its rich biodiversity, including unique flora and fauna, and its traditional villages, where ancient agricultural practices like terrace farming are still maintained. Jabal Akhdar is also a popular destination for hiking and exploring its dramatic canyons and scenic viewpoints.

Places to See in Jebel Akhdar

Diana’s Point
A dramatic cliffside viewpoint named after Princess Diana, who visited in the 1980s. It offers sweeping views of deep canyons and terraced villages below, especially stunning at sunrise or sunset.

Al Ayn and Ash Shirayjah Villages
These traditional mountain villages feature terraced farms and centuries-old houses built into the cliffs. Walking through them gives insight into traditional Omani life and farming.

Wadi Bani Habib
A picturesque abandoned village nestled in a valley surrounded by walnut and pomegranate trees. A short hike down stone steps brings you to ruins of old stone houses and quiet natural surroundings.

Terraced Farms
Scattered across the mountain slopes, these stone-lined terraces grow pomegranates, roses, peaches, and more. They are especially beautiful in spring when the roses bloom.

Saiq Plateau
The main plateau area of Jebel Akhdar, home to most accommodations and access points to hiking trails. It’s also where the cooler air and lush gardens really stand out.

Viewpoints and Mountain Roads
The mountain roads themselves provide endless scenic stops—look out for deep wadis, layered cliffs, and high-altitude landscapes on every turn.

One of the most popular hikes is the trail connecting Al Ayn, Ash Shirayjah, and other nearby villages. It winds through mountain paths, terraces, and falaj irrigation channels, offering both cultural and scenic experiences.

Trekking and Mountain Walks
Several trails range from easy walks to more demanding treks. Trails are well-marked and often pass through abandoned villages, wadis, and orchards.
